We all know how how it is to arrive at an airport and trying to connect to wifi... The wifi does not work, is slow or sometimes even must be paid for. Switching to your mobile data is not an option either, as this could be very expensive. These days, the best option is to buy a local sim card with data package.
When arriving in Thailand, there are usually already some options to buy a sim card at the airport. If you do not find a seller there or haven't had the chance yet to pickup some local currency, there are still numerous options when you leave the airport. All mobile operators have shops all over town and at shopping malls, and most convenient stores will offer tourist sim cards. Important to note is that you will need to produce your passport for registration. Thai law requires all sim cards to be registered.
The two biggest mobile operators in Thailand are AIS and True Move, They both have reliable networks with good reception allover the country. As they might promote 5G , it is fair to say that the 5G network is not fully up to speed in all areas. But still, internet speeds are quite good in general.
Most packages are offered for a duration of 8 days and 15 days. At the time of writing this article, promotions included 8=15 days and 15=30 days. So even on a long trip this would provide you with enough days. Data volumes differ from 10 GB to 30 GB, depending on the price of your package. Both operator include free wifi usage in locations where the have access points available. You will usually find their wifi points in malls and airports.
Another nice feature to note is that many social media apps will not add to used data within your package, so that alone already will save most people a few gigabytes.
